What to cover during your first day with your new workmate

  • Introduce yourself and your business. Provide the workmate with an overview of your services and what you have been up to/past and present efforts pertaining to his/her role.
  • Your standards and expectations in terms of workflow and manner of working. Lay out expectations and process/procedures to follow, standards to comply, and the likes.
  • Communication style and communication channel to be used (email, Skype, or other tools that you prefer). Let the workmate know which one you often use when you are out of the office in case they need to contact you urgently.
  • Frequency of communication expected. Do you want a start of the weekly meeting to plan for the week's goals or an end-of-the-week meeting to catch up on what has been done and provide feedback? You can choose one or both depending on your needs and preference.
  • Manner of reporting and reports expected. Do you want the workmate to send an end of day email which will indicate what they have done for the day, what they will do the following day and any speed bumps they have encountered or anything you need to take note of?
  • Credentials/ systems that you currently use that you want the workmate to use. Please provide all the details including credentials to your systems and document processes, etc.
  • File Sharing/Management. Where the workmate can access your files (i.e. Google Drive, Dropbox) and how often this should be updated.
